Cyclist Killed by Firetruck in Queens

Bicyclist

While an impact with any vehicle can endanger a cyclist, larger vehicles pose much more of a threat. A recent crash involving a cyclist and a firetruck showed just how dangerous these accidents can be. If a bicycle accident in Forest Hills harmed you or someone you love, you might want to consider your legal options alongside an experienced injury attorney. It may be possible to pursue compensation from government agencies, private companies, and negligent motorists.

NYPD Launches Investigation Into Firetruck Accident in Queens

In April of 2025, numerous sources reported that a firetruck had collided with a cyclist in Queens. The cyclist did not survive the impact, and NY Post says that the cyclist was crushed beneath the heavy truck. While no arrests were made, the authorities did not explicitly rule out some kind of traffic violation or error by the fire truck driver.

However, the NYPD did say that the fire truck was responding to an emergency at the time of the fatal collision. Police representatives also noted that the truck had its lights and sirens engaged. The cyclist reportedly “came out from behind a car” as the fire truck was turning onto Juniper Boulevard, subsequently smashing into the side of the fire truck.

After the collision, the cyclist fell underneath the rear wheels and was crushed. Images from the scene show first responders placing white sheets over the victim’s body and the surrounding area. Witnesses also say that after the crash, several firefighters seemed to be traumatized and shocked by the incident.

If the firetruck had its lights and sirens activated, it was probably traveling at a high rate of speed. That said, drivers of emergency vehicles are allowed to break the speed limit in certain situations. In this case, the firefighters were responding to a church fire.

Can You Sue a Fire Department for a Crash?

It is possible to sue government agencies like firefighting departments after crashes. However, injured victims must establish that their injuries were caused by some kind of negligence. This isn’t always easy, especially considering the fact that first responders are allowed to speed when responding to emergencies.

Key Takeaways

  • Road vehicles – including bicycles – should yield to emergency vehicles
  • Fire departments are not immune to injury claims
  • An impact with a heavy truck can easily be fatal for a cyclist
